First aid competencies and safe emergency response among adolescent students

The inadequate preparation of adolescents to administer first aid is an issue that limits timely and safe responses to emergencies within the school environment. The study aimed to determine the level of competence regarding first aid and safe emergency response among adolescent students by analyzing their knowledge, attitudes, and practical skills. A quantitative, descriptive, and documentary study was conducted through a systematic review of scientific publications and institutional reports covering the 2022–2026 period. The study was framed within the training needs identified by the community outreach project "First Aid for All: Community Education and Prevention Strategies," carried out by the State Technical University of Quevedo at the Eloy Alfaro Educational Unit. Scientific evidence revealed mean scores of 44.0 points for knowledge, 59.4 for attitudes, and 39.2 for practical skills. Educational interventions resulted in increases of 3.11 points in knowledge and 37.0 points in practical skills, according to the instruments used. The study concluded that school-based training needs to integrate theoretical knowledge, simulations, and periodic assessments to strengthen adolescent competencies and promote safe action during emergencies.
