Abstract

Contemporary higher education faces the challenge of moving beyond transmission-oriented instruction toward learning experiences in which students interpret, apply, discuss, create, and transfer knowledge. Active methodologies —including problem-based learning, project-based learning, flipped classroom, gamification, collaborative learning, and case-based learning— place students at the center of the educational process. This article expands a qualitative bibliographic review examining the relationship between active methodologies and meaningful learning in higher education. The review integrates conceptual literature, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses, emphasizing evidence published between 2021 and 2026 while retaining foundational contributions required to frame meaningful learning. The evidence indicates a generally positive association between active learning and student engagement, motivation, critical thinking, autonomy, problem solving, and competency development. Recent quantitative syntheses also report positive effects across several contexts, although effect magnitudes vary according to instructional design, discipline, group size, intensity of active engagement, teacher preparation, and institutional conditions. The article argues that meaningful learning does not automatically result from adopting an active technique; rather, it depends on the alignment of prior knowledge, authentic tasks, interaction, feedback, and assessment. Finally, an implementation framework is proposed linking diagnosis, instructional design, activation, pedagogical mediation, evidence generation, and continuous improvement.
